Before online shops, social networks, and complex web apps, there was one simple page — and a radical idea: documents should link to each other on any connected computer. What the first website contained. It was not a shop, nor a photo blog. It was a documentation page: what the World Wide Web is, how to use it, how to get a browser, how to contribute. Plain text, blue links, zero animation. The message mattered more than the design — and yet it opened the path to all the UI/UX we know today.
Why it was revolutionary. Before, networked information was hard to navigate: different protocols, terminal-style menus, no single experience. The web brought three simple pieces together: URL (the address), HTTP (how you request and receive the page), and HTML (how the document is written). Plus the hyperlink — click and jump to another document. Anyone could publish and read, on open standards.
Internet ≠ web. The internet is the global network (cables, routers, IP). The web is a service on the internet: pages and links via a browser. Email, for example, also uses the internet but is not “a website.” The first website popularized the web — and the web made the internet useful for the general public.
What happened next. The Mosaic browser (and then Netscape) made the web visual and accessible. Companies, e-commerce, and search engines followed. HTML evolved; CSS, JavaScript, mobile, and the cloud arrived. The core idea stayed: an address, a request, a document linked to others. From one page at CERN to billions of pages — the same DNA.
Lessons for today’s sites. The first website won through clarity and usefulness, not effects. A good site still answers: who we are, what we offer, how to continue (link, contact, action). Performance and accessibility matter more than empty animation. And open standards — which your browser still follows — are the direct legacy of that 1991 page.
